Who’s Spice Cake?

Spice Cake Music is the dynamic blues and jazz duo of Yaya Patterson and Miles Spicer — two musical souls whose complementary strengths have come together to craft a signature sound that’s soulful, inventive, and deeply rooted in tradition.

Formed officially in 2022, Spice Cake first gained local attention when they won their community’s “Battle of the Bands,” earning a trip to Memphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge — a milestone that solidified their creative partnership.

In performance, Spice Cake offers more than sounds — they invite you in. Their shows encourage audience participation: singing, clapping, dancing — a shared, immersive experience.

Whether on stage at festivals, intimate venues, or community events, Spice Cake Music delivers a musical “treat” — where authenticity, energy, and emotional resonance merge. Let their sound warm you, surprise you, and bring you back to the roots of what music can do - and make you feel.

Yaya Patterson - Vocals

Yaya Patterson is a dynamic vocalist and songwriter whose artistry blends formal jazz training with the soul of blues and the heart of community. A graduate of Temple University, where she studied jazz voice and music therapy, Yaya approaches every performance with technical excellence, emotional intelligence, and an open, inviting spirit.

She and guitarist Miles Spicer began performing together in local markets, community events, and senior outreach programs before officially forming Spice Cake Music in 2022. Their shared chemistry and creative curiosity quickly earned them acclaim, including a win at a regional “Battle of the Bands” that took them to Memphis to compete in the International Blues Challenge.

Yaya’s voice — at once smooth, powerful, and nuanced — anchors the duo’s unique sound. Whether interpreting classics or debuting originals, she brings warmth, storytelling, and joy to every performance, turning each song into a shared experience.

Miles Spicer - Guitarist / Vocals

With more than three decades in the Washington, D.C. blues scene, Miles Spicer has built a reputation as a skilled guitarist whose sound bridges tradition and soul. A longtime student of Michel Baytop, Miles carries forward the Piedmont blues lineage through his expressive fingerpicking, rhythmic sensitivity, and deep respect for the craft of storytelling through song.

He has spent years performing with the acclaimed M.S.G. Acoustic Blues Trio, bringing authentic acoustic blues to audiences across the Mid-Atlantic. Beyond the stage, Miles is a founding director of the Archie Edwards Blues Heritage Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional blues in the nation’s capital. His commitment to the Foundation reflects not only his musicianship but also his passion for mentoring and community-building within the blues world.

Whether performing with M.S.G., or his duo Spice Cake Music, Miles brings warmth, humor, and authenticity to every note — honoring the roots of the blues while keeping it vibrant and alive for new generations.
